Cost Optimization in Automotive Logistics under Supply Chain Disruptions

Abstract


Disruptions in logistics and supply chains increasingly affect the global automotive industry by raising transportation costs and causing delivery delays, particularly in intercontinental vehicle distribution. This study investigates the primary challenges in automotive logistics, with an emphasis on maritime and intermodal transport routes between Asia and Europe. A case-study-based methodology is employed to evaluate alternative transport scenarios, considering factors such as freight cost volatility, limited roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) capacity, and geopolitical pressures influencing route selection. Various logistics configurations are analysed based on delivery time and total transport cost under different disruption conditions. The findings indicate that supply chain instability and route deviations substantially reduce cost efficiency and delivery reliability. Additionally, the results demonstrate that flexible logistics strategies and adaptive routing approaches can mitigate these adverse effects. The study concludes by proposing a practical framework to support decision-making in automotive logistics, thereby enhancing resilience and cost optimization in a volatile global environment.
