Abstract

This works aims at summarizing three ECU parameter tuning efforts for enhanced vehicle dynamics performance of diesel coaches.

The first one is tuning the brake controller ABS algorithm parameters, such that during straight line split mu ABS braking, the steering applied by the driver to hold the vehicle straight, does not exceed the level indicated by the ECE R13 regulation. The second one is tuning the brake module traction control (ASR) parameters such that ASR is initialized earlier; at a lower tire slip threshold, to avoid unnecessary successive electronic stability control (ESP) interventions, during steering manoeuvres on low mu. The last one is tuning the gear down-shift schedule of the automated manual transmission of the vehicle (that is within the central vehicle ECU) during retarder lever braking, such that the engine brake feature is utilized more efficiently.

Vehicle test results are presented for each case, comparing the default parametrization with the tuned one, emphasizing the benefits that come with fine tuning the controller parameters.
