Evaluation of Measurement Techniques for Determining Rolling Resistance in Passenger Car Tires

Abstract
This study investigates the rolling resistance characteristics of passenger car tires through a comparative experimental approach utilizing two distinct methodologies. The first method employs a roller-based chassis dynamometer, originally designed for braking system diagnostics, to evaluate resistance torque. The second method utilizes a towing procedure, where the tractive effort is quantified via a force-measurement system integrated between the lead and test vehicles. Comparative analyses were performed on both summer and winter tire compounds to identify performance variances across different seasonal specifications. The derived rolling resistance coefficients (RRC) were subsequently validated against established benchmarks in the existing literature to determine the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed measurement frameworks.
