Integration of Digital Mapping into a Motion Simulator for High-Fidelity Vehicle Dynamics Assessment

Abstract


The advancement of simulation technologies has led to their widespread adoption across diverse industries, particularly within the automotive sector. In professional motorsports, high-fidelity simulators are critical for driver development across elite categories, including Super Formula, LMP2, LMH/LMDh, Formula E and various Formula tiers. These systems offer significant advantages, such as cost reduction, risk mitigation by preventing on-track incidents, and a decrease in fuel consumption. Simulation hardware ranges from basic peripheral setups to semi-professional cockpits and advanced, professional-grade motion platforms capable of replicating vehicle dynamics. Central to these environments is the creation of precise virtual maps, derived either from online datasets or direct geospatial measurements. While mobile applications and dedicated devices facilitate coordinate acquisition, LiDAR (Laser Imaging, Detection and Ranging) remains the most sophisticated method for high-resolution terrain data collection. This paper details the experimental methodologies employed to acquire data for a virtual reconstruction of the University Politehnica of Bucharest campus and its subsequent integration into the globally recognized simulation platform, Assetto Corsa.
