Performance evaluation of ZEISS T-SCAN hawk 2 for 3D digitization and geometrical inspection of a large automotive component

Abstract
Portable optical 3D scanning is used in industrial inspection when large dimensions, freeform surfaces or restricted access make conventional measurement less suitable. This paper presents a case study using a ZEISS T-SCAN hawk 2 to digitize a plastic automotive dashboard about 1.5 m long, with overall dimensions of roughly 1500 × 600 × 400 mm. Satellite Mode was used for the measurement. Applying the reference markers and setting up the calibrated scale bars took about 10 min, followed by about 30 min of scanning. The acquired dataset contained 946,719 points. Processing and evaluation were carried out in ZEISS INSPECT. The alignment sequence consisted of Prealignment and Global Best-Fit, after which five local profiles were evaluated using a 0.1 mm profile tolerance. The case study shows how a handheld scanner can be used to acquire full-field data from a metre-scale automotive component with freeform geometry. Since no nominal CAD model, independent dimensional reference or repeated scans were available, the work does not assess measurement accuracy or repeatability.
