Assessing the inertia and drag of the twin-roller dynamometer and of the tested vehicle

Abstract
To obtain reliable results from tests performed on the roller dynamometers, it is mandatory to know the inertia of the rotating parts for both the stand and powertrain of the tested vehicle. Similarly, the estimation of the power losses appearing in the dynamometer, in the vehicle powertrain, and at the tire-rollers contact is also required for the experiments of interest, mainly as functions of speed. During tests, the influences of the moment of inertia and drag torques are mixed, making it difficult to separate them by processing only the experimental results. The paper presents possible ways to experimentally assess first the inertia of the rotating parts and then to estimate the resistances affecting the stand rollers and vehicle wheels.
