Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the importance of conflict flow in evaluating the performance and safety of roundabout intersections. The primary objective of the study is to quantify and interpret traffic conflicts as a key indicator for assessing both operational efficiency and road safety.

The proposed methodology integrates automated traffic data collection using the DataFromSky platform, which leverages artificial intelligence and video processing techniques to accurately extract vehicle trajectories, speeds, and interaction patterns. Based on these data, conflict points and conflict flows are identified and classified, enabling both quantitative analysis (conflict flow) and qualitative assessment (types of maneuvers and associated risks).

The analyzed indicators include traffic flows, conflict intensity, spatial and temporal distribution of conflicts, and their correlation with geometric and functional characteristics of the roundabout. The results highlight that conflict flow represents a valuable metric for intersection assessment, providing additional insights beyond traditional performance indicators such as delay, capacity, and level of service.

Furthermore, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of AI-based tools in capturing detailed traffic dynamics and supporting data-driven decision-making processes. The findings contribute to a better understanding of traffic behavior in roundabouts and support the development of optimization strategies aimed at improving both safety and operational performance.
