Analyses of public transport network configurations. A case study of the municipality of Bucharest

Abstract


The development of urban space, conditioned by the configuration of the street network, influences the dynamics of urban mobility and, consequently, the design of public transport networks. Metropolitan areas developed on historical radial-monocentric or polycentric models, confronted with accelerated expansions of peri-urban and suburban zones, frequently generate the phenomenon of traffic congestion.

This paper analyses the interdependence between urban form typology, the expansion of the metropolitan surface, and the characteristics of transport networks. The proposed methodology uses topological concepts and principles of road network hierarchy, while integrating quantitative assessments based on raster-type spatial structures.

The aim of this study is to analyse how the public transport network adapts to significant changes in urban form. The case study presents the situation of the municipality of Bucharest, characterized by a central core with satisfactory access to public transport services, in contrast to peripheral areas, where street networks - dissociated from urban development interventions over the last two decades - limit the coverage area of the public transport network.

Preliminary results of the case study suggest that the public transport network requires a transition toward an integrated development model encompassing different categories of public transport lines. This paradigm must support a hierarchical structuring of public transport services and facilitate intermodal transfers as a primary planning instrument.
