Methodology for determining the stability zone of the milling process

Abstract


Plastic components are increasingly used in the automotive industry, and their manufacture requires increasingly complex injection moulds. For the manufacture of these moulds, materials specially designed for severe operating conditions are frequently used, and they are processed by cutting without subsequent heat treatment. This requires the appropriate establishment of cutting parameters when milling the moulds to avoid chatter. This paper proposes a methodology for establishing cutting-regime parameters during contour milling that enables identification of the milling process's stability zone for a given technological system. The methodology is based on measuring vibrations of the processing technological system using the range of cutting regimes recommended by the tool manufacturer, performing milling experiments, and processing the acquired signals and resulting data. Its purpose is to recommend cutting intervals that ensure dynamic process stability and, as appropriate, high productivity or low surface roughness.
