A Reproducible Measurement System for Assessing the Operational Compatibility of Public Transport Infrastructure with Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract


The integration of autonomous vehicles into public transport requires infrastructure to be assessed in terms of measurable physical and digital characteristics correlated with the functional requirements of the Automated Driving System (ADS). This paper proposes a reproducible measurement system based on 40 indicators structured into eight domains: road geometry, road surface, road markings, traffic signs and signals, public transport stops, visibility and perception, localization, and digital/V2X infrastructure. For each indicator, the measurand, measurement method, calculation formula, sampling procedure, measurement uncertainty, and conformity criterion are defined. Sample size is determined according to measurement variability and the required precision, while uncertainty is estimated using eight common metrological models. Compatibility is assessed using a non-compensatory approach based on a conformity matrix. The proposed method enables the identification of incompatible segments, the underlying infrastructure-related causes, and the ADS functions potentially affected.
